The inhibitory effect of celery, peppermint extracts and their mixture in comparison with amikacin on uropathogenic isolates: an in vitro study.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are regarded as amongst the most common serious health problems that affect millions of people each year. The antibacterial activity of two different plant extracts & their mixture at two different concentration (100 & 200 mg/ml) were carried out against two uropathogens Known as mainly bacterium induced urinary tract infections in humans & animals.
The dried extracts of celery seeds and peppermint leaves and their mixture were tested in vitro against six isolates of E.coli & three isolates of K.peumoniae by agar well diffusion & micro-diluted method. Amikacin (10µg) was used as reference antimicrobial. The plants extracts and their mixture showed closed related, potent antibacterial activity and inhibition patterns varied mainly according to the concentration of extracts. Moreover, the E.coli & K.peumoniae showed nearly same sensitivity towards the studied plants in culture media and micro-diluted plate. The MIC was measured using standard two-fold microdilution broth methodology at concentrations ranging from 8 μg/ml to 4096 μg/ml. The MIC values of the ethanolic extracts of celery, peppermint & their mixtures were in the range of 256 to 512 µg/ml against E.coli and 128 to 512 µg/ml against K.pneumoniae.

Synthesis of new bis-1,3-oxazepine-4,7-dione derivatives containing tow azo groups and preliminary evaluation of their antibacterial activity

In this work new bisazo bis -1,3-oxazepine - 4,7- dione derivatives have been synthesized via cycloaddition reaction type [2+5→7] of phthalic and maleic anhydrides to some synthesized bisazoimine derivatives .
ortho-Tolidine was converted to the corresponding bisazoaldehyde derivative 1 via coupling reaction with phenoxide anion of 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde. Aldehyde groups in bisazoaldehyde derivative 1 was condensed with different primary amines and only one hydrazine derivative (cyclohexylamine, phenylhydrazine, 2,4-dimethylaniline, 4-methoxyaniline, aniline and 4-bromoaniline) in presense of glacial acetic acid as catalyst in absolute ethanol to give bis-azoimine derivatives 2a-f respectively. The resulting bisazoimine derivatives 2a-f were then introduced in [2+5→7] cycloaddition reaction with each phthalic and maleic anhydrides in dry benzene to give new bisazo bis-1,3-oxazepine-4,7-dione derivatives 3a-f and 4a-f respectively.
All the synthesized target compounds 3a-f and 4a-f have been characterized by (C.H.N.) elementary micro analysis and the spectroscopic methods including FT-IR , 1H NMR for compounds 3a-e and 4a-e and 13C NMR for compounds (3a, 4a and 4e). The last step included preliminary evaluation of antibacterial activity for all target compounds 3a-f and 4a-f which were tested against Staphylococcus aureous (Gram positive) and Escherichia coli (Gram negative), these activities have been determined in vitro using disc diffusion method (Agar), the results revealed that some of compounds showed measurable activity as shown in table (9).

In this work new 1,3-oxazepine-4,7-dione derivatives containing azo group and 1,3,4-thiadiazole moiety have been synthesized. At first, the primary aromatic amine 2-Amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole was converted to the corresponding azoaldehyde derivative containing 1,3,4-thiadiazole moiety 1 via coupling reaction between its diazonium salt and alkaline solution of 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde as coupling reagent. Next , the resulting azoaldehyde derivative 1 was respectively introduced in acid-catalyzed condensation reactions with the primary aromatic amines (3-nitroaniline, 4-methoxyaniline, 2,4- dimethylaniline, 4- hydroxyaniline) in absolute ethanol to give four new azoimine derivatives containing1,3,4-thiadiazole moiety 2a-d respectively . Later , treatment of the resulting azoimine derivatives 2a-d with each maleic and Phthalic anhydrides under the same cycloaddition reaction conditions afforded eight new 1,2-disubstituted-1,3-oxazepine -4,7-dione derivatives 3a-d and 4a-d respectively.
The structures of all synthesized oxazepine derivatives 3a-d and 4a-d were confirmed by (C.H.N.S.) elementary micro analysis and the spectral methods including FT-IR and 1H NMR for most derivatives (3a, 3b, 3d, 4a, 4c and 4d) . The synthesized oxazepine compounds (3a, 3b, 3c and 4b) were tested for their antibacterial activity against two pathogenic strains of bacteria, Staphylococcus aureous (Gram - positive) and Escherichia coli (Gram - negative). The results revealed that the tested oxazepine derivatives showed inhibition activity against Gram - positive bacteria is relatively higher than that of Gram - negative.

Serological examination to detect CMV virus and ultrasound examination to known congenital anomalies in embryos among aborted and pregnant women blood sample of 750 and children blood sample of 36 was carried out in Al – karama hospital and AL-Zahra hospital of Wasit province from January to July 2012. Overall prevalence of CMV (positive cases) was 345 (43.9%). Prevalence of virus increased in age (23-29) and there were highly significantly (P
